i hate..

... sealed plastic containers that you can't open without scissors and then which threaten to cut your innocent hands with their sharp, rigid edges as you try to pry out your poor electronic gadget from its vaccuum-sealed tomb.

yargh!

me too!!

although i was hoping you would discuss more of the philosophical implications of using such armor to deter theft, while destroying the gentle fingers of legal buyers.

also, why is it so hard to cut them with scissors? why must they insist on using curves that are scissor-proof? And why must you cut around the whole edge in order to open it reasonably?

i would think they would lean towards such a terrible packaging implementation if it were cheaper or more efficient to produce, but i've heard actually that it's quite expensive. in fact, a bird told me that it's illegal in some countries now (including europe) because of the cost, the waste, and the danger. amen! can't they make it illegal here?

and do you think it really deters theft? any decent-sized handbag would easily slip one of those packages inside without notice... it's not like criminals go in and open the packages in the stores and only steal the product inside (unless there is some alarm attached to the packaging, which in this stupid dangerous plastic world, there usually is not).

I was thinking of this same subject just this morning!!! Argghhh! Damn you hard plastic that can't be cut with scissors!!!!

my new hair clippers i bought yesterday have come in such packaging. i stared at them for 10 minutes this morning trying to figure out the best angle to go about my butchering, much like i do an animal on my cutting board...and then i got really sad and gave up. i don't think there's a way in there. i'm scared.

a story:

once upon a time i bought fancy earphones for aaron and me. two different brands. mine, etymotics, came in a little cute plastic package that had flaps that opened up and voila! they slid right out of the packaging. I'll probably even keep the packaging since it's cute and small and maybe i'll sell them on craigslist when I get tired of them.

aaron's headphones, shure, were in the dreaded blister pack. it was basically a plastic bubble with no flat surfaces that you could actually put scissors through. I spent a good 15 minutes trying to break into it. It ended up in about 15 pieces before I could reach the middle. It was also about 10 times the size of the other package. There's nothing I could save if I wanted (even that paper insert with info on it is now unsalvageable) so it's a pile of trash waiting to slice up your fingers.

I think Amazon should come with a "dangerous packaging" warning.

Then there's airplane food, which generates a mountain of trash. They have these packages you need good teeth to open, and sealed covers on liquids that threaten to run down your leg while you peel the seals off. They ought to package the stuff like astronauts' food so you can just suck it out of tubes.
